An Introduction

May 30, 2008

Well, here we are. The Holm Photo blog is on the web. So now what? That is probably a good question, so I will use this first blog entry to answer it. First, an introduction.

If it has a lens on it I shoot it. I work both as a photographer and director of photography and have worked in many different jobs in the film and video business as well as photography. There are differences between still work and motion pictures, some pretty big, but when you get down to it, the basic principles are the same. Light enters a lens, a medium is exposed (film or a chip) and an image is recorded. I was fortunate to begin my learning when all things digital were just beginning and most photography was recorded onto film. I learned to edit with a flat bed film editor and finished my final college project on an Avid. I have worked in a couple of different photo labs along the way and have grown to really understand how film works. Now, I shoot most of my photography and video with digital cameras.

Holm Photo currently is made up of two, myself and my wife Kelsey. You will see both of with a camera stuck to our faces at a wedding. She focuses on writing and producing whereas I focus on the photography, gear, and post-production…all the fun stuff right? If we have a mascot it would be our dog, Chief. He is a 12 year old Akita and still acts like a puppy. Okay, a really lazy puppy, but you get the point. In case you are wondering it is his face that adorns the home page of HolmPhoto.com. He is an only child and keeps me company when I work in the office. I’ve tried to get him more involved in the photography end of things but his lack of thumbs really makes it hard for him to hold a camera.

The entries in this blog will primarily focus on photography. Whereas HolmPhoto.com will give a good sample of our work, the intention of this blog will be to give the reader a little insight into who we are. It will also give me a chance to display some of my more…personal photography that just don’t have a good home on the website will show up here. For example, here is one of my favorite photos as of late.

I took this photo while on vacation in Seattle, Washington. We had been skiing earlier that week and decided to take one day to visit the famed Pikes Market. After a few hours in the market we headed towards the downtown to see what else there was and thats when we ran into this guy. Now, there are normally two things that happen when I take a photo of someone randomly like this. Either they ignore me and carry on with what they were doing or they quickly turn and put a hand up or position themselves where I can’t shoot them. This guy saw what I was doing and posed for me. And I did give him some money. Anybody that can make me laugh like that has earned his money.
